Install and find PSI companion

The ZIP version installs manually in Chrome on Windows, Linux and macOS. A Chrome Web Store release will follow, providing simpler installation and Chrome-managed updates. Use only the package offered on this page.

Manual installation and updates

If downloads are available on this page, download the package from PSI. On Windows, choose “Extract All”; on macOS, open the ZIP; on Linux, use your archive manager. Keep the extracted folder in a permanent location: Chrome still needs it after installation. Enter chrome://extensions in the address bar, enable Developer mode and choose “Load unpacked”. Select the folder containing manifest.json, then pin PSI companion from the Extensions menu. Reload any YouTube and PSI tabs already open. At first launch, choose whether to automatically share public metadata about the YouTube videos and channels you browse, with no financial commitment; declining keeps browsing features available. To update manually, close contribution pages, replace the files in the same folder, click “Reload” in chrome://extensions and reload your tabs. Do not remove the extension to update it. An organisation-managed browser may prohibit this installation; no workaround for that policy is provided.

Three simple actions

From a YouTube video

Open PSI companion. If a tuit exists, read it or open the channel’s page on PSI. Otherwise, propose the channel to expand the catalogue.

From a PSI summary

Return to the original video. The “View channel on PSI” button opens the other summaries from that channel.

Help set priorities

The popup links to language and channel votes, one-time or annual support, the guestbook and the shop-interest vote. One vote is accepted every 15 seconds, without an account or link to donations.

What PSI companion supports

Find a tuit from YouTube, choose among its available languages, open its channel on PSI and return to YouTube from PSI. Propose a channel, submit a transcript after review and help set project priorities. Metadata is sent according to your explicit choice in settings. Shorts are not supported.

Voluntary participation

At first launch, explicitly choose whether to automatically send PSI public metadata about the YouTube videos and channels you are browsing, such as identifiers, titles and visible counts. This is a data contribution, with no financial commitment. PSI companion is active only on YouTube and PSI — Post Singularity Institute pages. It does not collect personal information about you. Declining keeps browsing features available. Settings let you change metadata sharing and active requests separately. Transcripts are sent only after your review and confirmation. Votes, data contributions and donations remain independent.
